Sexual Health
Sexuality is a multifaceted and deeply personal aspect of a woman's life, intertwining physical sensations and emotional connections that shape her self-perception and overall well-being. A woman's sexual health plays a pivotal role in her overall health, yet it is often overlooked or misunderstood. Studies reveal that 43% of women experience some form of sexual dysfunction, with 30% reporting low or absent sexual desire. Additionally, nearly 25% of women face challenges with achieving orgasm, and 20% endure sexual pain disorders.
Sexual health concerns are frequently misdiagnosed or dismissed, often overlapping with other medical or psychological conditions, leaving many women without the support they need. Despite being common, these issues remain under-recognized in healthcare settings. Our practice is dedicated to addressing female sexual health through a comprehensive, integrative, and functional approach that considers the whole person—mind, body, and spirit.
Unfortunately, there are few healthcare providers equipped with the specialized training required to accurately diagnose, manage, and treat sexual dysfunction in women. We strive to fill this gap, offering compassionate, evidence-based care that empowers women to reclaim their sexual health and overall vitality.
The following is a sampling of the types of conditions that we regularly treat:
Menopause and Sexuality
The hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause, particularly the decline in estrogen and testosterone levels, can significantly affect a woman's sexual health. These changes may lead to alterations in sexual desire, arousal, and overall sexual function, impacting intimacy and enjoyment.
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a prevalent health issue, primarily caused by bacteria that enter the urethra and travel into the urinary system. These infections are common and often occur when bacteria from the external environment make their way into the urinary tract, leading to symptoms like painful urination and increased urgency.
Orgasm Issues
Female Orgasmic Disorder (FOD) refers to the persistent inability to achieve orgasm, even with adequate sexual stimulation. Women with FOD may find it difficult to experience orgasm, whether during partnered sex or self-stimulation, which can impact both their sexual well-being and satisfaction.
Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
Pelvic floor dysfunction arises when the muscles in the pelvic region either become too tense (high tone) or too weak (low tone). This imbalance can lead to various symptoms such as urinary incontinence, constipation, discomfort during intercourse, and pain in the lower back, pelvic area, genital region, or rectum.
Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD)
Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD) is characterized by a persistent and often distressing lack of sexual desire or fantasies. Women experiencing HSDD may have little or no interest in sexual activity, which can affect their relationships and emotional well-being.
Dyspareunia (Painful Intercourse)
Dyspareunia refers to ongoing or recurrent pain during or after sexual intercourse, particularly during vaginal penetration. This condition can cause significant discomfort and distress, making sexual activity a painful experience for many women.
Female Sexual Arousal Disorders
Sexual arousal disorders in women are marked by a lack of response to sexual stimulation, whether physical, emotional, or both. This condition can involve a diminished sense of arousal from intimate touch, kissing, or even mental stimulation like erotic fantasies, affecting sexual satisfaction and intimacy.
Vulvodynia and Vestibulodynia
Vulvodynia, previously referred to as vulvar vestibulitis syndrome (VVS), is a condition characterized by chronic pain or sensitivity at the vaginal opening. Women with vulvodynia experience discomfort or burning sensations, often making sexual activity or even everyday activities like sitting uncomfortable or painful.
